28th March London Wide Strike Action Against Pension Robbery

The next stage in the campaign to defend our pension scheme is a London wide strike by the NUT and the University and College Lecturers Union on March 28th.

Further strike action after this will be debated at NUT national conference over Easter. In the recent survey NUT members voted overwhelmingly in favour of continuing the campaign over pensions and also in favour of further strike action to this end. Thanks to all those who responded, we will certainly be working to make sure these views are put forward at conference.

We have to contiune to oppose working until 68, a smaller average salary pension and paying more (with the first contribution increase due in April).

To support our colleagues in London taking strike action before Easter, NUT Associations around the country are ‘twinning’ with a London Association.

East Sussex is pairing up with Lewisham, Brighton and Hove with Southwark, Medway with Greenwich and Kent with Bexley and Bromley. We would encourage all NUT members and school groups to help us support our colleagues in the capital.

To provide support for striking colleagues in London, we would like you to:

  • Send a message of support to London teachers. (click for: Lewisham, Southwark, Greenwich, Bexley, Bromley) Emails from individuals are great, from reps and school groups even better.

  • Please hold a short meeting at lunchtime on or in the run up to Wed 28th March, take a photo of the group in supportive pose or holding a poster and send it to colleagues in London via the email address above.

  • Donate to their Hardship Fund either individually or by having a collection box in the staff room. Send cheques to your LOCAL NUT Secretary or Treasurer.

  • If you are a retired or part time member of the NUT who would be able to head up to London with the local NUT banner to take part in the strike day demonstration on the 28th please let us know.
